Work Diary&Progression- Colour

Evaluation:

In today's lesson we we're given the task of photographing 'colour', I found this extremely interesting as I enjoyed capturing images of bright, vibrant colours.

A image I like:

I chose this image as my best image due to the saturation of the colours on the sign. This catches the viewers attention and draws your eye into the image. The dull sky in the background is hugely contrasted by the sign, and the analogous colours it obtains, this is a good use of colour as this image shows how colour can draw your eye into an image. Blue and red are complementary colours as when combined they make black/white. The angle of the image is also good to as where i've photographed it lower down you can see more of the sky, therefore this helps contrast the complementary colours on the sign.

A image I did not like:

This image is one of my worst of the day. If i was to re shoot this again i would include more colour into this image as the green is dull and boring, and are muted colours. In addition i would photograph this image from further away, with no zoom as i believe i could have incorporated more of the plant into the image. This image doesn't accurately represent colour accurately, as it's mainly greens, when i could have included more colours- which would have made the image more interesting.

Progression:
If I was to reshoot I would like to focus on duller colours, as many people focus 'colour' being colourful, whereas 'colour' includes all colours, not just bright ones.

Colour Image Bank

Colour Image Bank:

I chose this image as I like how the colours blend into eachother. I believe this represents colour well as theres a variety of colours which are bright, and eye catching.
I chose this image as the unberellas are all varied colours. The colours in the whole image are not bright (illuminous) but more pastel and subtle (exept red and blue) which created a slightly sofer colour overall accross the whole image.
I chose this image to represent colour as its a slightly abstract way in representig colour. The way the colours on the fruit fade into eachother is extremly interesting, espechially as its fruit and not ordinary colour blocks.
I chose this image as it differs from the others as it doesnt obtain lots of various colous it is predominatly blue. This shows us how the element 'colour' doesnt have to be lots of different colours, it can be mainly one.
I chose this colour as the blue and the red are evidently different. This shows how colours dont always have to match or be simular as the red and the blue together creates a bold statement, which stands out and catches your eye.

This image represents colour well as it exposes the analogous and complementary colours. This image is bright and colourful and due to the material in which the colour is on being shiny, this enhances this further.

Definition Of Texture

Texture:

Texture- the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance. The texture of an object may be affected by the direction/angle at which light hits it, this is due to the light creating shadows on the object.

Adjectives/synonyms for 'texture':

  • rough
  • smooth
  • hard
  • fine
  • crackly
  • course
  • bumpy
  • soft
  • flexibility

Smooth Texture:
Here we can see how the horizontal lines help create a smooth texture.

Rough Texture:
The indents in the rocks show how the floors texture is jagged and rough, due to it not being on one smooth level.

In this image below we can see how the wood is rough and corse, due to the cracked appearance this adds to the texture of the image. It's extremely worn which also allows us to infer it's well used and weathered.

Whereas in this image below, it is again an image of wood however in this image we can see how it's extremely smooth, and appears new. There's no cracks in the wood and the surface is smooth, which adds to the texture of the image. This allows us to see how the same object can obtain different textures.

My own definition of texture: How something appears to the eye, whether it's smooth/rough and how it would feel to touch it.

Final 5 Images- Colour

Final Images:

I chose these images as my final ones as they're the most colourful. I like how in some of the images certain parts are in focus, highlighting the colour, and other parts are blurred which means you don't focus on them as much.

I like this image as I believe the colour of the berries is saturated. the red and green contrast each other well which catches your attention and draws your eye into the image. The lighter greens on the below side of the leafs also soften the bright red of the berries in the image slightly. Green and red are complementary colours, meaning when combined they create black and white.

I like this image as the pink and green are muted colours. They work well together and create a calm atmosphere in the image. the calmer/slightly duller green and pink colour are soft on the eye and allow you to feel comfortable viewing the image.

The red in this image suggests anger, contrasting with the slightly green-yellow leafs which portray joyous emotions. These colours create almost a fiery appeal to them. The colours in the image work well together as they're analogous colours also.

This image obtains muted colours in the background, whilst in the foreground there's a fierce red. The green bush and the red pot are complementary colours; meaning they combine to create black and white. I believe this image represents colour well because as well as there being a bright red in the foreground there's various other colours in the background which also catch your attention.

The red and blue colours are saturated in this image; in addition they completely contrast the dull grey sky in the background. This image is extremely eye catching and gains peoples attention due to the saturated colours. the blue symbolises a cold objects (like ice), whereas the red symbolises heat and hot objects (like fire.)

Definitions Of Colour

Colour Definitions:

Colour: the property possessed by an object as a result of the way it reflects/emits light.

Saturation: the intensity of a colour, expressed as the degree it differs from white.

Muted Colour: primary or secondary colours mixed with a grey to essentially ‘tone’ them down.

Analogous Colours: groups of three colours that are next to each other on the colour wheel, with one being the dominant colour, which is usually a primary or secondary colour, and one on either side of the colour.

Complementary Colour: a colour that combined with a given colour makes black and white

Colours can also be used to portray emotions. Colours are used in photographs to convey a particular emotion towards the image or by the photographer at the time.

My own definition of colour: how bright something is, it could have a dark colour, or a light colour- but everything obtains some type of colour.

Work Diary&Progression- Line

Evaluation:

In today's lesson we was asked to focus on the component 'line', these lines can be horizontal, vertical, curved, or jagged. When given this task I thought it would be quite boring; however, once I got out and started taking photographs I realised lines are technically everywhere! Therefore there were lots of different objects I could photograph

A photograph I didn't like:

I photographed this image of a tree for my line project. However, I dislike this image as if i was to shoot it again I'd position the trunk in the middle of the photo, to allow viewers eyes to follow up the trunk and along all the jagged lines on the bark. Furthermore, I'd have used a different angle as I'd have taken the image from lower down the trunk to get more lines into the picture from the bark. The bark has harsh angry lines, and then the leaves are softer lines which are separate from the bark, I like this. the horizontal lines I've captured in this image suggest power, corresponding with the tree itself as they're both tall and powerful.

A photograph I did like:

I like this image that I photographed as the focus point is on a jagged, wide line in the centre of the image, due to the focus point your eyes are automatically drawn here, therefore allowing you to see the purpose of the image (lines), I chose this image as one of my best because the cracks in the mud are random, which expresses chaos and disorder of the ground, and how unpredictable and random lines can be. Horizontal and vertical lines are used showing strength but also calmness and tranquillity.
