Image Manipulation - Image Bank

I like this image, as it takes an everyday activity and makes it unique. It's also an interesting image as the elephant is actually winning the race, when we'd assume that it would be last- this adds to the abstract qualities of this image. The colours in this image also work well together as the dusty browns contrast with the clear blue sky.

This image makes the sea of houses below, almost appear as a carpet, or a wave, rising up into the air. I would like to create something similar to this; however, I do not know how I would photograph a town from that high in the sky.

This image is inspiriting as it takes an ordinary human, and makes then appear unnatural. It almost takes the literal meaning of 'knot in my stomach' and makes it a reality. I could attempt to recreate this image in the studio.

This image is strange as the mans face appears to be a book, with numerous pages. This image is extremely unique and abstract, which makes it interesting and easy to view. The muted colours in the image also work effectively.

This image is inspiring as it's ironic and humorous, as the watermelon actually has become a 'water' melon, with a fish in it too, again adding to the humour.

This image is abstract, as you'd assume the glass would break and not the hammer, it's  portraying a role reverse.

Image Manipulation - Work Diary & Progression

Evaluation:

In today's lesson we were given the task of editing objects, into other images. I did not photograph any of the images below, I go them off of the internet. I was merely trying to improve my editing skills, not my literal photographing skills during these topic. I enjoyed this topic, as it allowed me to work freely on Photoshop, editing various objects into any landscapes I want. I went with the idea of animals in their habitats.

An image I like:
I like how I've edited this image as I used the burn tool to make the two animals which I edited into the image (foxes) darker, so they would blend into the image, and not stand out due to their brightness. This image looks extremely realistic and doesn't look edited at all.

An image I do not like:

I do like this image, however I believe it is the weakest link out of the two, as I should have edited the image so the sunlight hit the right side of the lion, not the left, this would have made the image more realistic, and believable. Moreover, the zebra stands out too much, I should have used the burn tool in order to darken the animal, to allow it to  fit into the image better.

Progression:

Instead of just placing animals into the image I'd like to manipulate and combine images, in order to vary and expand my techniques.

Image Manipulation- My Edits

The above image I created on photoshop, I got three images online (a lion, zebra and the landscape.) I created this image by firstly opening up the landscape, then I opened up the two images of the lion, and zebra. Next, I used the select tool to highlight the background of the images, I the inverses this and dragged them onto my landscape. I used cmd T to resize the images, and i then dragged them into place to complete my image.

The two images adjacent I created on photoshop, I used the same method as the image above to create these. The top image is how the image looked after completing the steps above. The bottom image is after further editing, I used the colour selection tool to select the colour of the background near the foxes, I then lowered the opacity and flow to 23%, I then painted over the three animals (the two foxes, and the robin in the tree.) I did this to make the image appear more realistic and blend with the natural shadows in the image. This is my favourite image i created as i believe it appears realistic.

Image Manipulation

Image manipulation is image editing whereby an illusion/deception is created, it is much more obvious than usual editing, it may include placing things where they're not meant to be.

The above image creates a different perspective of the image, it's an inventive and creative way in portraying a small house on an island.  This image uses image manipulation to almost make you question your eyes, due to the image being so strange. I like this image as it makes the house become part of the fish.

Image manipulation obtains ethical issues including:

  • the manipulation of someones face (e.g. a beauty model) creates misleading goals for girls to try an obtain
  • the result of a product may be enhanced, leading to false advertisement
  • if you're documenting something it's arguable whether or not you should edit the image, as you're meant to document it factually
  • looses the 'natural' feeling of an image, giving a false representation
  • historical images are arguably wrong to manipulate as you're essentially 'changing history'
However, image manipulation is good:

  • when editing images for age appropriate audiences (e.g. news articles)
  • when giving people a self esteem boost (e.g. removing scars they may not want)
  • can enhance your personal images (e.g. eliminate unwanted light reflection)

The image on the right shows how image manipulation can be used to enhance looks. It's evident how the female has been made slimmer, and colour manipulation has been used to make her appear more tanned. This process occurs daily in the media, on various things such as magazine covers, advertisements and music albums. The image on the right portrays an artifical image, which is impossibly reached, this can damage young people, and cause eating problems/endless use of make-up, in an attempt to cover 'flaws.'   Despite this, the model may have been insecure and wanted her image to be manipulated, therefore this is a positive aspect of this.

Industry where image manipulation is used:
  • fashion
  • film
  • TV
  • music industry
  • sport
  • journalism
  • nature photography
  • comedy photography
  • fine art
  • business
  • portraiture

my own definition: the manipulation of an image in order to achieve a desired changed perception.
