Work Diary&Progression- Form

Evaluation:

In today's lesson we were given the task of photographing  the element 'form'. At first I found it difficult to get my head around what form was, and I found it hard to capture images showing  this effectively. However, I did like exploring this topic as a whole, as it helped me learn more about lighting, and how it can affect an image.

A photograph I like:

This was my best image of the day as we can clearly see how the light is used and reflected off the glass in this image. The light follows the turns of the vase, which allows us to understand it's a 3D structure.  In addition, the angle i took this picture from is good as it allows us to see the same vase again in the background, however this one has less light reflecting off of it and it's slightly duller, showing it has less form than the vase in the foreground.

A photograph I did not like:

This image was one of my worst of the day. There's hardly no form in this image due to there being a minority of light creating shadow. If I was to shoot this again i would take the image from a different angle, therefore creating more shadows, which would allow for form to be present. The only bit of form we can see in this image is the shadow from the frame of the board. I would get more of the frame in my image too if i was to re-shoot this again.

Progression:

If I was to reshoot I would get closer to the objects, I would also photograph in the studio in order to control the lighting easier (using snoot/honeycomb...) Some images below show how I could take photographs in the studio.

Final 5 Images- Form

Final 5 Images- Form:

I like this image as you can clearly see the light being reflected in the vase, consequently you can see how the vase curves, creating a 3D image of the vase. In comparison to the duller vase in the background as there's not enough light hitting it, causing it to appear more 2D.

In this image you can see how form is present through the curved face of the light. In the reflection of the light you can see the landscape outside curving which allows us to see the light is 3D (form.) The shadow also allows us to see that the light is 3D as the light is hitting the front of it, projecting a shadow behind.

In this image we can see that the wall is 3D, creating form. The shadows in the image also allow us to see that the wall is 3D. The depth of the wall also allows us to see the form as the bricks get smaller the further away they are.

The bike in this image shows form well due to the shiny metal poles, the highlighted area on the bike (poles) allows us to see it curves as the light curves when it hits this- therefore it's 3D.

I like this image as the light in the reflection of the glass curves, allowing us to see the glass is 3D. This image shows form well due to the direction of the light hitting the glass.

Form Contact Sheet

Form Image Bank

Form Image Bank:

I chose this image as i like the different shade used to help create form, due to this shade we can see how the flower curves, turning into the flower itself in the middle. This image has inspired me to take images of flowers when i go and shoot.

I like this image as you can see the smoothness of the white stones clearly, contrasting with the slightly rougher black stones. In addition, the contrast of black and white colours also reflects the different forms. The use of the light allows you to see that the stones are 3D and not 2D as you can see their shadows on the backdrop.

I like this image as it's focused at the beginning of the leaf, but the end is blurred. The curved edges of leafs also shows form as you can see the image is 3D, and not 2D again. I particularly like the curved edges as it's unique to see.

Form is shown in this image as you can clearly see the dip in the middle of the image, the different shades of red also help portray this. The light helps show form in this image as you can see the depth in the lines on the object due to this.

This image helps show form as the light projects the shadows down on to the middle of the squares, as this image is taken from an angle it helps us see the shadows easier too as they're projected down into the squares again. We can clearly see the squares are 3D as in the distance they get smaller, whereas at the front they're bigger.

I like this image, it represents form well as the patterned vases cast shadows below which allows you to see that these vases are 3D.

Definition Of Form

Form Definition:

Form is the visible shape or configuration of an object, it is the particular way it appears. Shading helps contribute to form.

Adjectives & Synonms for 'Form':
  • Shape
  • Design
  • Layout
  • Format
  • Outline
  • Exterior
  • Appearance
  • Arrangement
  • Construction
  • Structure
  • Formation
  • Configuration

I like this image of the pool balls as the light creates a shadow projected onto the table, this enhances the curved shape of the balls. This shows form as it allows you to see the balls are 3D.

I like how this image shows form as it's in black and white you can see the shadows easier, allowing your eyes to focus on the form aspect more.

This image shows form as the shadows of the bark show how it's 3D, not a 2D image.

This image shows form as on the back of the ladybirds backs you can see how they're 3D, the light hits the backs (the highlight area) and creates shadows below.

My own definition of form- how something may appear 3D, including shadows.
