Definition Of Texture

Texture:

Texture- the feel, appearance, or consistency of a surface or a substance. The texture of an object may be affected by the direction/angle at which light hits it, this is due to the light creating shadows on the object.

Adjectives/synonyms for 'texture':

  • rough
  • smooth
  • hard
  • fine
  • crackly
  • course
  • bumpy
  • soft
  • flexibility

Smooth Texture:
Here we can see how the horizontal lines help create a smooth texture.

Rough Texture:
The indents in the rocks show how the floors texture is jagged and rough, due to it not being on one smooth level.

In this image below we can see how the wood is rough and corse, due to the cracked appearance this adds to the texture of the image. It's extremely worn which also allows us to infer it's well used and weathered.

Whereas in this image below, it is again an image of wood however in this image we can see how it's extremely smooth, and appears new. There's no cracks in the wood and the surface is smooth, which adds to the texture of the image. This allows us to see how the same object can obtain different textures.

My own definition of texture: How something appears to the eye, whether it's smooth/rough and how it would feel to touch it.
